Smart Ways to Deal with Stress

Stress is around us constantly.  It comes from all directions and it often feels nonstop.  Now, I’m not here to talk to you about how to make your life stress-free, because I’m not sure that can even happen.

(But if it can, let me know!)

What I want to talk to you about are three really intelligent (which means super smart scientists cane up with it) ways to handle the myriad of stressors that come your way.

As always the juiciest stuff is in the video below, but if you’re too pressed for time to watch the full 6 minute video, here’s a quick snapshot.

  • Shift your mindset around stress.    Instead of thinking about stress as a horrible, terrible thing, consider thinking about stress as a motivator.  It’s not stress itself that is a killer.  According to researchers, a negative mindset around stress is deadly.  Believing stress is bad for you is the 15th leading cause of death in the US.  Making it more deadly than cancer, HIV/AIDS and homicide.   Wow!

  • Silence those news alerts!  Watching 3 minutes of news at the start of your day can increase your chance of feeling like you had a bad day by 27%, 6-8 hours later!  Limit the text message news alerts and commit yourself to specific times at the end of the day to catch up on everything that’s happened.

  • Move to “Now what?” status.  It’s so easy to stay in the moment of examining “what” happened.   When stressors arrive, you’ve got to shift to “now what?” mode.  Consider taking one small, yet meaningful, step towards dealing with the stressor in front of you.  You don’t have to solve for your stress in one moment.  Take the minor step of just getting started.

The corporate world needs that unique gift that only you bring. So go out into the world, act with conviction, be courageous and live joyfully every single day.
