These first few weeks of virtual work during COVID are tough for me. Like…seriously tough for me.
Even though it’s tough, I’m thankful for the family, friends and colleagues who have reached out, share experiences, fears and most importantly – laughs. Along the way, I’ve tried and learned how to work better together in a virtual environment. I’m excited to share a few virtual work rules to help you too.
- Know how your fellow virtual coworkers like to connect. Whether it be Microsoft teams, text, email, zoom – whatever. What is the best mode of technology to use with the people you want to connect with and to. Have a talk with them and listen to their preferences. Keep in mind what tools they have available to them
- Know the best times to connect. With this shift to more virtual work, new routines may have developed to keep ourselves sane and our family happy and healthy. Understanding the best times to connect and which times are off limits can build positive virtual work relationships.
- Know the best ways to collaborate. What system(s) will you use to collaborate on documents. Version control is critical.
- Consider how you want to build trust with people you work virtually with. This includes speedy response times, doing what you say you will do and offering your support to help out, when you have the bandwidth to do so. It’s a crazy time and we need each other in many different ways.
