Imagine a world where you knew exactly what your boss expects from you. TADA! I’m apparently in a wish granting mood this week. This week’s video is my gift to you. 4 boss hacks so you go down in history as one of the best employees your boss ever had. You’re going to learn the four things every boss wishes their employees knew.
As always the juiciest stuff is in the video below, but if you’re too pressed for time to watch the full video (it’s about 3 minutes), here’s a quick snapshot.
Boss Hack #1. Say What You Need. Most employees approach their boss and say something like; “I need more development.” or “I need more training.” That’s not the same thing as “I need more development on my executive presence”, or ”I need more training on in Excel”. Be very specific on what you need to be successful. That way your boss knows how to help you and ultimately the team win.
Boss Hack #2: It’s better to under promise and over deliver. Yes, this is me encouraging you to beat the deadlines your boss sets. That’s part 1. Part 2 is that when you get that work to your boss (ahead of the deadline), make sure it is some of your best work. If it squeaks in before the deadline but doesn’t reflect the high quality work you want to be known for, you missed the mark.
Boss Hack #3. Respect your Boss’s Time. If you block time on your boss’s calendar for 30 minutes, but you have an hour’s worth of stuff, you should change the invite to reflect the additional time needed Honor both the hard and soft stops that your boss may have. You never know what high impact work your boss mentally or actually had planned to tackle.
Boss Hack #4. Be fun! Every single boss on the face of the planet wants someone who’s a ball to work with. It’s not just your boss’s responsibility to make work and the team fun. So, don’t take the work or the team too seriously. Being your fun human self is what your boss wants. I promise.
