Light on work experience? Get the respect you crave (and deserve) without having a decade or more of experience.
Breaking into a new field with limited work experience can feel like a recipe for career disaster. Before you talk yourself out of a move, watch this week’s video. You’ll learn, in less than 3 minutes, how to overcome a lack of work experience by capitalizing on things you can do at any stage in your career.
- Study the business/ industry like your life depends on it. Be curious about what makes the business move, what hinders it & who does what.
- See your difference as a strength. Being inexperienced in’t always a deal breaker. Own it. Your lack of work experience comes with a host of other awesome traits. If you’re not sure what unique things make you impressive, start with a moment of reflection. Ask yourself, “what do people compliment me on?” Come up with 3-5 characteristics. These are your natural strengths. Play them up to counteract your lack of work experience.
- Volunteer willingly, especially for the stuff that scares you.
- Build relationships. Just like building relationships outside of work, connect with people to learn more about who they are, not just what they can do for you.
