Build Your Office Cred (when you Don’t Have Work Experience)

Light on work experience?  Get the respect you crave (and deserve) without having a decade or more of experience.

Breaking into a new field with limited work experience can feel like a recipe for career disaster.  Before you talk yourself out of a move, watch this week’s video.  You’ll learn, in less than 3 minutes, how to overcome a lack of work experience by capitalizing on things you can do at any stage in your career.

  1. Study the business/ industry like your life depends on it.  Be curious about what makes the business move, what hinders it & who does what.
  2. See your difference as a strength. Being inexperienced in’t always a deal breaker.  Own it.   Your lack of work experience comes with a host of other awesome traits.  If you’re not sure what unique things make you impressive, start with a moment of reflection. Ask yourself, “what do people compliment me on?”  Come up with 3-5 characteristics. These are your natural strengths.  Play them up to counteract your lack of work experience.
  3. Volunteer willingly, especially for the stuff that scares you.
  4. Build relationships.   Just like building relationships outside of work, connect with people to learn more about who they are, not just what they can do for you.
